Using Area Rugs to Complete Your Kitchen

Your kitchen has long been used as simply a workspace in your home. Turn your kitchen into someplace more inviting with the colorful touch of an area rug.

If you have a small kitchen, or it's a place that you, or anyone else for that matter, rarely visit, you may be disinclined to decorate at all. I completely understand that feeling. Living in a home that was built in the 1960s that has never been updated I know what it's like to have both a kitchen that no one visits and a kitchen that is too small for many visitors at one time. Regardless of the fact, I've recently figured out that if I were to make my kitchen seem more inviting, it would be a place I'd actually want to go, not just a place I have to go.

One of the first changes I made to my kitchen was the countertops. A ghastly shade of marbled orange plaster made it nearly impossible to decorate, but I bought a $10 bucket of countertop paint-yes, this really exists-and changed them to a coat of country red that would make an farmhouse maiden proud.

And of course, the whole country theme followed-roosters, apples, sunflowers and chickens are now on everything, from the oven mitts to the paper towel and banana holders and of course, the dishes.

But there is nothing that I am so proud of in my kitchen today as the rug I choose to complete the theme and make my kitchen more inviting. You see, my kitchen is visible the moment you walk into my home, and originally, it was a dull and dingy place. But with the red countertops and the matching, cream and red checkered runner with sunflowers going straight through the middle of the floor, my guests no, go in that direction instead of towards the living room which still has some work left to do.

The great thing about area rugs in the kitchen is that they're different from the norm. Most people stick with tile or linoleum in white or neutral tones that accommodate the "work space" reputation kitchens have gotten over the years.

But a rug can change your kitchen into an inviting hangout or living space where you want to spend time-that makes it easier to stay in instead of eating out.

You can use a large area rug in dark colors to create a sophisticated feel in your kitchen or you can use light tones to make it seem lighter, full of life and extremely inviting. If you don't have a kitchen that is large enough for area rugs, you can always do what I did and choose a runner that can go straight up the aisle of a rectangular kitchen. Or, if you have a smaller, boxy kitchen, you can select accent rugs that match your counters, your cupboards or your theme.

Remember, your kitchen doesn't just have to be a workplace. You can turn your kitchen into an inviting space in your home with just a simple touch of color and fun from an area rug.
